Guwhati Chess Academy was established on the year 2006. Initially its activities were confined to organizing tournament and impart occasional training to chess players. In the year 2006 Guwahati Chess Academy Guwahati Chess Academy first organized a State Level chess tournament in Jubilee Hall, Noonmati, Guwahati with the support of Guwahati Refinery. The second edition of this tournament was held in the year 2007. Apart from the Assam players were participated from Nagaland, Arunachal, Tripura and Manipur and West Bengal also. IM Shankar Roy and Laltu Chatterjee from West Bengal and FM Prasenjit Dutta from Tripura were notable participant. Apart from these tournament Guwahati Chess Academy organized 5 All Assam School tournament also from 2008 to 2013 in Gauhati Commerce College, Assam Jatiya Bidyalay and Shilpgram. These tournaments were able generate interest and awareness among chess lovers and guardians and succeeds promoting and popularizing chess in the region.
Later it was felt that, organizing chess tournament and imparting occasional chess training has benefit but these activities are not sufficient for sustaining development and interest in chess. Therefore, need for regular coaching was felt and as a result we decided to start regular coaching. Regular coaching started in current location from 2nd July,2016. Since then, academy is instrumental not only promoting and popularising chess but also creating some of the finest youngster from Academy. Over these periods, academy produce many districts, state champions and also International Fide Rated players. We are proud to announce that Mayank Chakraborty who was student of Guwahati Chess Academy from July 2016 to March, 2018 went on to win National Under-11 title in 2019 and won a gold medal at the Western Asian Youth and Junior (Under 10) Chess Championship. Mayank Chakraborty and Krishnav Mrinmoy Hazarika, who is current students of our Academy wins silver medal in under 10 and under 6 categories of National School Chess Championship 2019 at Aurangabad.
